Odessa High held their Junior Senior prom at the MCM Grande Hotel and FunDome on April 22. This placement allowed for more tables and a bigger dance floor and it also gave them access to workers from the MCM hotel to check refreshments and to keep the buffet table stocked. The prom went about as normal with an “Alice in Wonderland” theme taking inspiration from different sources across the gambit from the original books and animated movie to the new live action movies. This was shown in the decor and costumes the working teachers wore. They were dressed up as different characters from the stories ranging from the March Hare to the Clock Lord. The only other main difference was the DJ. Odessa High hired DJ Tony to perform the night. He also had a constant Facebook live video running of the dance floor.

Many students enjoyed how the prom was handled this year.

“It [the decor] was super pretty, they were detailed, cute little nick-nacks” said junior Larissa Lopez.

This is a sentiment felt by the other students.

It [the decor] was really nice, I really liked the screen behind the DJ that showed some snippets of Alice in Wonderland!” said Senior Megan Abila.

“It [the prom] was nice it was something new, I’m glad we got something more than what last year got.” said Senior Gabrielle Cordova.

“I think we did amazing I was part of the Junior Board and we spent hours, no a whole day, putting the decorations up,” Said Junior Ismael Martinez.

Prom boasted a different atmosphere at the FunDome, yet the dance floor was a tight squeeze, especially through all the music from the band and DJ Tony.

“I thought the dance floor was kind of small, but that didn’t bother me much,” Abila said, “…it was nicer than the Coliseum barn. It felt like an actual prom.”

The smaller space did not stop students like junior Facundo Hinojosa from enjoying the festivities.

“I really liked the music and all the decorations at prom!” said Hinojosa

The hotel requires ID showing a person is 21 or older to rent a room. Students were not exempt from this rule. Many of the rooms are open bar or bar fridge rooms and thus required ID and age verification. The school took certain precautions to avoid students renting hotel rooms.

Prom was a thing to remember with a scholarship giveaway for the attending seniors from the DJ and five affiliated companies the event lasted till midnight and was quite a sendoff to this year’s seniors.
